Course: ART 425 Integrated Visual Studies (4 Credits)
Course Description:
Interdisciplinary and guided study linking systems of knowledge. Students are
offered the space to draw on their breadth of information and artistic mediums to create a capstone
project that demonstrates an ability to communicate effectively across verbal, visual, and written
forms. Develop skills as makers and thinkers. Foster a critical awareness of how society reflects and
produces visual meaning.
Instructional Pedagogy:
Traditional lectures, small group discussions,
inquiry, field-based research, and flipped classroom exercises. Theories are translated into practice
through hands-on activities, projects, and service-learning experiences. Classes will be a student-
centered, arts-centered, participatory, interactive, and inquiry-based.

Visual Poem​

In this assignment, students have to visualize their personal understanding of one possible research inquiry that they want to explore in this course. Students will create three visuals as paragraphs of a poem to represent how they understand this inquiry in the past, how they understand it now, and what they want to discover further. Most of the students appreciated this art practice, which probed them to think about their research inquiry further.

Inquiry Collage

In this assignment, students have to pre-collect materials that can represent their concentration on art and other academic subjects. They then have to think about how to assemble the materials into one collage image. This practice helped students visualize how to select elements of their inquiries from two different areas and combine them into one.

To adapt to the pandemic hybrid learning situation, many assignments are required students to make audio presentations when they are given more individual working time at home.

2022 FA: ART425 Capstone Showcase at the Direction Gallery, CSU, Fort Collins, CO.
In December 2022, I curated the first ART425 Capstone showcase for ART425 students. Students participated in setting up the gallery and decided how they wanted to present their capstone projects. It is important for ART425 students because they were “no concentration area” before the course, and it was hard to feel a cohort to belong to. In order to help students receive professional feedback other than mine, I arranged for different professors and professional people from students’ research areas to give their project ideas feedback. This approach was deeply appreciated by students.
​Knowing that the entire course members would display their artworks or research projects together and prepare together through planning and giving each other feedback for improvement united the entire class.
