2020 Fall

2021  Fall

Instructor

Course: ART 325 Concepts in Art Education (3 Credits)

Course Description:

The intent of this course is to introduce students to concepts of how artistic learning occurs in children, adolescents, and adults—including special populations. Additionally, students will investigate how these concepts shaped art education practice in the past and how it continues to influence current pedagogical practice. This class is meant to provide a foundation for later coursework in art education and K-12 art teaching.

Instructional Pedagogy:

This course is designed to begin to allow students to explore their role as a practitioner. Theory is translated into practice through hands-on activities and service-learning experiences (The service-learning in the FALL 2020 term is currently canceled because of health concerns). Classes will be student-centered, participatory, interactive, and inquiry-based. In Fall 2020, the course will be conducted as a hybrid course during the pandemic. Most of the course will meet in the classroom by strictly following the heath protocols; while some lectures may be posted online for students to study at home, depending on the situation.

As an instructor, I

  • Assist students in applying theories to practices:

    • Service learning: Design lesson ideas and make student documentation for teaching students in special education (collaborating with Artistic Abilities and Community Connections)
      Selected service learning/teaching blogs:

    • ART & PLACE-Transform the courtyard into a learning studio for children (Assignment link. Invented in 2021 Fall)
In this project, students were probed to think about how to create a “meaningful play” corner with students by transforming a place at school (courtyard). The project idea is inspired by Reggio Emilia Approaches’ concepts of “environment is the third teacher” and exploring materials. The instructor first leads a classroom conversation with students and invites students to observe and investigate how they want to transform a place using the project-based learning approach. ART325 students complete four steps of the project for their transformation proposals: Ideation, research, sketch, and making a budget and material lists. Students then propose their plan to the Department Chair for the further action plan.
      Selected student presentation slides:

    • Movement & Art (First facilitation in 2021 Fall)
I collaborate with the instructor, Lisa Morgan, at the Dance Program at CSU to invite ART325 students to utilize body movement to interpret art elements. This arts-integrated approach encourages students to think about art from a different perspective and see how art elements are all connected in different forms of art.

    • ART325 Contemporary Artist Research Project (Started to be implemented in class in the 2020 Fall. Last updated in 2021 Fall)
This assignment wants to urge art education students to explore contemporary artists who are promoting a specific awareness to society to make research. After doing the research, the students will develop a lesson plan based on the chosen contemporary art/artists.

Due to the pandemic impacts after March 2020, the course is forced to change to a hybrid course, and all the service components are forced to change. To respond to the pandemic situation, some technology integration and revised approaches were taken:

    Students’ blogs:

  • Design an Object Lesson: Exploring Material Culture_A Daily Life Object Project (Assignment link. Facilitated in 2020 Fall)
This assignment is designed for students to think about how to design a lesson plan by connecting secondary students’ daily life experiences. Inspired by material culture studies and the artist Nick Gentry, in this assignment, students have to think about what object can represent middle school students’ material culture based on their observation at middle schools to design an art project. Furthermore, ART325 students have to apply the strategies that are mentioned in the assigned reading (Anna Burkhart, Object Lessons: Thinking about material culture) to guide middle students to complete the project. To learn to adapt to a pandemic teaching situation, ART325 students are required to develop videos and a web page to demonstrate their lesson ideas.

  • Collaborated with Mrs. Jenna Riep at the Wellington Middle School for ART325 students to do service learning online, helping middle schoolers. The assignment: Link
