Research--> Discussion and Group Practice-->Indivudual Art Making

ABOUT ME

Claire (Ting Fang) Chien

I'm a PhD student who currently study at the University of Arizona, Art and Visual Cultural Education Devision.

Focus areas: Museum education, adult learning, Western art history in the 19th century, and Chienese art history in Ming dynasty

This is an arts-based research project that I researched gender roles with my students through art practices.

My students are all non-art major students, who are in the class ARE130 Exploring Art and Visual Culture in the discussion sections that I lead this semester.

ABOUT THIS PROJECT

In this project, I am an artist, a researcher, and a teacher.

My theoretical framework is formed by new materialism, arts practice research and a/r/tography.

I make digital artworks to reflect my teaching , my learning and my critical thinking in the process

WHAT I DO

Where the stories began?

Parodoxes from sexual differing

What here presents is students' "before" and "after" reflections in the research phase and the final indivudual art making phase. Please rollover on the photo and click "Go to link" to see that student's artowrk and critical reflections in this project.

My art responses to the journey of exploring gender role

Our Amazing Stories
Final reflection of the project

I may not be able to change the stereotypes or gender norms, but at least I can stop making advancing them. As an educator, it is also my responsibility to educate my students to stop sexual differing and be open-minded to accept diverse voices in society. In doing so, I am trying to contribute to inspire and generate social shifts through art education. Everyone can make their own Amazing Stories.

I am glad to see how diverse my students’ perspectives of gender roles as well as their changes during their art making practices. Their creations inspired and emerged into my artworks. Therefore, in order to make my arts-based teaching experience more visible and exchangeable, I made this educational website to share my teaching resources, teaching process, my students’ and my Amazing Stories in this amazing journey of the project. By sharing my teaching resources with other art educators and the general public, I believe that one day it can matter another conceptual shift of sexual differing and provoke social differing.

Finally, thanks to the students who agree me to share their images of artworks as well as their reflections in this website.
