Jennifer Linton, Danae, 2003
Historical Background:
Linton wanted to focus on how women in society are put into a box of what the world see’s. She shows how the body evolves and so do the boxes that the world puts them in based off of where the female is in her life.
Representation of Gender Role:
Women are seen as being weak and defeated. How they are but into a square and judged based off of what the look like. The world doesn’t pay attention to what a female’s body has gone through. Or what that woman has seen in her life. Here we see her trapped in the small container that society puts her in
RESEARCH
Rachel, Danae, 2015
I decided to tackle the discussion of how females are put into a box and are trapped from the worlds point of view.
I decided to reform Danae by Jennifer Linton. Since the orginal shows how females are put into a box and exposing them for who they are, I wanted to change that. I wanted to show how easy it is to free a woman.
To show the freeing of the woman I decided to cover her up. When the orginal exposed her, we were able to see everything and her face showed expressions of not wanting to be seen. By putting shorts, a shirt and shoes on her, it seams as if she is at the liberty to break out of the box that she is in. She doesn't appear to be "trapped."
INDIVIDUAL ART MAKING
The precess did help me understand gender roles. When I think of art, I see a image in my mind that can "break the rules." By breaking the rules I see how artist's are able to portary any one in any way because it is art. However after exploring more, I can see how it may be art, but a statement is trying to be made. By how we view the art work is how the world will view the worls. I never thought how big of an impact such a small change could make.
